Oakland's Art Funding was Saved!

In one day the Express staff contacted approximate 25,000 people to join in the effort to help save very important arts funding. And you met the call - THANK YOU! Along with the Oakland arts community, which organized at rapid speed and showed tremendous leadership in organizing this effort, we collected 3000 signatures on the petition, city council members were inundated with calls and emails, 250 people signed up to speak at the meeting, and so many people showed up as a sign of support that they spilled out into Frank Ogawa Plaza. Large monitors in the foyer of City Hall communicated the meeting to the folks who couldn't fit into the meeting room. The photo on the right is of a student who benefits from Oakland's art funding who used her one minute of speaking time to do an outstanding musical performance.

There was no doubt that if the arts funding had been cut as planned, it would have been a historic setback for our community. Your overwhelming response to this threat was simply inspiring.

Still, Oakland made severe budget cuts, and many services and jobs will be reduced or cut. If you want to learn more, you can visit the city's website. www.oaklandnet.com

Profoundly grateful,
