The days of Top Gun are over. Air Force Major Tom Egan (Ethan Hawk), a former fighter pilot, now sits in front of a screen in an air-conditioned trailer on a base outside Las Vegas and directs lethal drone strikes on targets in Iraq and Afghanistan. Eventually Major Tom’s moral doubts about his mission begin to wear him down – so does the fact that the CIA takes command of his attack wing. Writer-director Andrew Niccol’s anti-war war movie forgoes bombastic pathos and heavy irony to fashion a cooled-out protest against this particular form of push-button warfare, and war in general, bolstered by Hawke’s powerful performance. Actress January Jones (from Mad Men) provides solid support as the major’s impatient wife. Thought-provoking (102 min.).
