Initially, Derwin never intended to release the music he made — repurposed old sounds created on an Akai MPC 2000XL sampler — but then the UK label Ghostly International discovered the London-born, Berlin-based electronic producer (who goes by the handle Gold Panda and will only reveal his first name) on MySpace. His subsequent debut album, Lucky Shiner, received critical praise for its nostalgic-yet-unfamiliar vibe when it was released in 2010. After touring extensively for three years, Gold Panda released Half of Where You Live earlier this year; it’s an explicit homage to many of the distant places touring took him. This effort is darker and even more trance-like than his debut: There are no obvious singles or even clear melodies. But that fact is likely to make his upcoming performance at The Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco) an even more immersive, head-drowning experience. With Slow Magic, Voices of Black, and DJ Dials.
