Gigi's Hella Gay Dance Party

When: Sat., June 13, 9 p.m. 2009

San Francisco may have its famed Castro district, its Frameline Film Festival, and its iconic hang-out spots. But Oakland also houses a large and vibrant LGBT population -- one that may, in fact, be growing faster than that of its sister city. With the increasing demand has come several new clubs, including the Vibe Lounge downtown, and Club Velvet, which serves queer women in the LaurelDistrict. Older joints like the White Horse also stepped up their game by hosting drag king shows and dance parties that cater to a younger, hipper demographic. And the scene keeps expanding. This Saturday, June 13, marks the first installment of Gigi'sHella Gay Dance Party, a new fete with a rotating cast of DJs spinning disco, hip-hop, mash-ups, electronica, and indie rock at Oakland's Ghost Town Gallery (2519 San Pablo Ave.). Local vet DJ Black is the leading act. 8 p.m., free. MySpace.com/GhostTownGallery
