As of this writing, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon — who perform at 1015 Folsom (1015 Folsom St., San Francisco) on Thursday — are running a crowdfunding campaign to finance The Purple Tape Files, a documentary about Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, which is one of the finest solo statements from a member of Wu-Tang Clan. It’s telling that one of the rewards is a personal assessment from Ghostface and Raekwon on mixtapes from those who contribute. Once the fundraising wraps, the website explains, the rappers will invite select emcees into their studios for a seminar on making “iconic records.” The use of the word iconic suggests that Ghostface and Raekwon have no illusions about how Cuban Linx is perceived: As a high-water mark of not only the artists’ discographies, but of the genre as a whole. So, are they underselling it? The perk comes in at a mere $200.
