Rated PG-13 104 minutes 2016

A movie delivered by a book-lovers’ time machine, this amiable literary character study shows what happens when book editor Maxwell Perkins (Colin Firth, solid as ever) meets talkative, self-centered, unpublished author Thomas Wolfe (Jude Law, trying a little too hard with the Southern accent) in 1930s New York. It’s buddy love at first sight, despite the doubts of Nicole Kidman and Laura Linney as the women in their lives. Actor-turned-director Michael Grandage, working off a script adapted by John Logan from the book by A. Scott Berg, treats Max and Tom’s relationship as if it were high drama instead of bookish gossip, with cameos by Ernest Hemgway (Dominic West) and F. Scott Fitzgerald (Guy Pearce) for added sheen. Non-essential but oddly delightful (104 min.).
