Gas Prices Spike Amtrak Capitol Ridership

As the Chron reports, a steep rise in the price of gas has caused a remarkable jump in the number of people taking the Amtrak Capitol line from Oakland to Davis and Sacramento. According to Amtrak officials, ridership has risen 13.6 percent in the first seven months of this fiscal year (and we apologize for having to write that sentence). The Chron takes a ride on the lines and finds a few people who just loooove riding the train, and how it's so much more eco-friendly than cars. Color us unimpressed; if gas drops to $2.80 a gallon, we've got ten bucks says those folks will be back on the road. But it's nice to see standing-room only in the Capitol cars; maybe that Los Angeles bullet train isn't as dead as we thought.
