DJ & Dance

When: Sun., July 28, 9 p.m. 2013

When three veteran music nerds take over the turntables for a brand-new party, you never know what to expect — especially when said music nerds are experts in noise, drone, and psychedelic music. But that doesn’t mean the new party in question, Gargamel, will be inaccessible. “We all like noise, but we’re not playing noise records,” said Gargamel organizer George Chen. Chen — an Oakland comedian, musician, and DJ who owns the Zum label — will be joined on the decks by another local record-label owner, Paul Haney, and arts curator and bassist Ceci Moss. Chen’s taste is nothing if not eclectic: Zum has released music by seminal artists small and large, including Deerhoof, Modest Mouse, and !!! Haney’s Obsolete Units label, founded in Brooklyn in 2006, specializes in underground psych-rock, noise, and drone. Moss has collaborated with some of the leading musicians in noise and no wave as part of the Cellular Chaos collective and as a member of the duo Medved, and currently works as an assistant curator at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Expect the DJs to play their favorite tracks in hip-hop, synth, post-punk, reggae, and other genres at The Night Light (311 Broadway, Oakland). The mix is guaranteed to be diverse, obscure, and weird — but not too weird.
