Rock & Pop

Gardens & Villa

When: Thu., April 26, 9 p.m. 2012

Santa Barbara's Gardens & Villa dip into rock, synth-pop, brit-pop, and any other contrived genre that you could imagine, thumbing through your iPod on a sunny afternoon at Mosswood Park. But Gardens & Villa is greatly deserving of any tag you'd throw at it; with a solid rhythmic base, delicate vocal panache, a flute, and appealing, trebly electronic adornments, it makes for one of the most light-hearted listening experiences in independent music today. The band's friend and fellow Santa Barbarian Nathan Salman leads Waterstrider, another resplendent jungle-pop outfit from Berkeley. They've played shows together before, and I couldn't imagine two better rock bands to put on the same bill. Gardens & Villa just finished recording a second album, and Waterstrider is penning its first. Both promiseĀ  to be perfect entrees to summer. At The New Parish (579 18th St., Oakland) on Thursday, Apr. 26 at 9 p.m., $10, TheNewParish.com
