Blues, Folk, & Country

Gandalf Murphy

When: Sun., Sept. 21, 8 p.m. 2008

If the band's title isn't enough to tip you off, Gandalf Murphy & TheSlambovian Circus of Dreams is an unclassifiable, free wheeling freak show, and that's freak in the most flattering terms. The emerged from the Hudson River valley of New York at the turn of the century, producing two amazing albums on their own small and not widely distributed label. They sound a bit like Arlo Guthrie fronting Tom Petty's Heartbreakers with an exhilarating brew that starts out as folk rock but folds in country, roots, psychedelia, blues and more into a highly original sound. The most famous pull quote calls them a "hillbilly Pink Floyd," but that doesn't even scratch the surface. Cosmic, funny and heartwarming with amazing musicianship and a skewed way of observing the universe makes them a band to watch. Gandalf Murphy & TheSlambovian Circus of Dreams plays Sunday September 21st at the Freight and Salvage. 8:00 p.m. $18.50 advance, 19.50 door. TheFreight.org
