Adam Sandler plays a super-successful stand-up comic named George whose celebrity has left him so alone that he has nobody to confide in about the rare blood disease that will likely kill him. Cue Ira (Seth Rogen), a young, going-nowhere comedian. George takes the guy under his wing, and a bond begins to form that offers up some interesting commentary about fame and success. Mostly, its a coming-of-age story for Ira. Funny People isnt always funny (though it is, a lot), and its too long by thirty minutes, but its definitely writer-director Judd Apatows most emotionally ambitious work to date. Theres an earnestness here thats rare in comedies these days (146 min.).
