Kelley Stoltz appears to have what would have been an idealized musician's life circa 1967: spending months writing and recording songs, with a roomful of vintage instruments at his disposal, and then touring around the world to a constant stream of fans. Somehow, in the 21st century, Stoltz is living this analog dream (he records to tape only), and he can still afford an apartment in San Francisco. Well, not somehow. Stoltz is, of course, an incredibly talented songwriter whose muse shows no signs of leaving him alone. Which is just as well. His last effort, To Dreamers, still finds him firmly planted in the sounds of the past, producing such romping numbers like "I Like, I Like" and jangly instant-classics like "Rock & Roll with Me." If anyone should be allowed to live in the past indefinitely, it's him. With Fruit Bats and Gold Leaves at The Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco) on Thursday, Apr. 26. 8 p.m., $15, $17.
