Friends and Lovers

When: Feb. 27-March 2 2013

The concept behind Friends and Lovers was to have two artist couples -- Charlotte Drury and Andrew Luck, Lauren Napolitano and Shrine -- each create an installation for Old Crow's front gallery space over the course of a year. Unfortunately, one of them broke up just a few months before the scheduled install, nearly derailing its piece, which the couple then cleaved. Not to suggest that this outcome was intentional, but the gallery did pursue this exhibition from an experimental perspective, eager to chart the effect of a shared art practice on personal relationships. The works in the show are impressive: large wooden structures bearing symbolism and decorative motifs from cultures spanning the globe, profusions of found material, paintings and sketches. In both cases, the respective aesthetics of the artists almost rhythmically merge and separate. One, however, is undoubtedly more seamless than the other. Can you tell which? Friends and Lovers runs through March 23 at Old Crow Tattoo and Art Gallery (362 Grand Ave., Oakland). 510-834-2769 or
