When: Thu., Aug. 23, 7 p.m. 2018
At first glance, Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards looks like a standard string quartet, but the band’s percussive strumming, bluesy vocals, and lyrical, rockin’ take on folk music puts it in its own category. Its Compass Records debut, California Calling, sounds warm and comfortingly familiar while also subverting roots traditions. (California is calling because Cortese was born in San Francisco but now lives in Boston.) The four women create beautiful harmonies with their voices as well as cello, bass, and fiddle. In fact, that latter is what specifically brings the band to Berkeley: Freight & Salvage’s 30th annual Fiddle Summit. Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards will be joined by other fiddle-forward acts, Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas, Anders Hall, Adam Johansson and Jens Linell (of SVER), Moira Smiley, Cali McKasson, and Nic Gareiss. Prepare to be roused by the multidimensionality of the humble fiddle.
