Free Coffee Roasting Demo

When: Mon., Jan. 12, 5-8 p.m. 2015

Gourmet taco connoisseurs in Oakland might be familiar with the Uptown outpost of the food truck extravaganza Off the Grid, at the intersection of Williams Street and Telegraph Avenue, at which some of the Bay Area’s most prominent street food purveyors cook up a storm each Monday from 5–8 p.m. Now, Off the Grid is teaming up with the Oakland-based Food Craft Institute to offer a series of free educational workshops. First up: The fine folks at Sweet Maria’s — Oakland’s unrivaled source for all things coffee — will lead a free demonstration on how you can roast your own coffee at home without using any fancy equipment — just a hot-air popcorn popper. For those who want to take their roasting skills to the next level, the demo is actually a preview for the Food Craft Institute’s upcoming five-week Coffee Roasting and Retail course (January 22–February 24), which is tailored for people who are planning to open their own coffee business.
