Frances Ha

Rated R 85 minutes 2013

Actress Greta Gerwig and director Noah Baumbach are an ideal match in this artfully delivered romantic character study of an urban young woman trying, in vain, to get her adult life started. Baumbach’s (Greenberg, The Squid and the Whale) sophistication helps Gerwig (Lola Versus, Hannah Takes the Stairs, Baghead) rise above the Mumblecore minor leagues, and in return she lends an easygoing charm to his charm to his films they never would have possessed otherwise. Broke New Yorker Frances (Gerwig) can’t find a steady job, a boyfriend, a place to live, or even hold her own at a dinner party, and yet we not only sympathize with her, we embrace her like a long-lost best friend. Compare this to Manhattan or Truffaut all you want – Gerwig is a complete original. Screenplay by Baumbach and Gerwig. Costarring Mickey Sumner and Adam Driver. Strongly recommended. (86 min.)
