Four Lions

Rated R 102 minutes 2010

What if the jihadist terrorists we’re so deathly afraid of were stupid bunglers? That’s the irresistible premise of director/co-writer Chris Morris as he follows the comic misadventures of a cell of homegrown, would-be suicide bombers in England. Behind the silly disguises, hilariously inept tactics, and general inattentiveness of Omar (actor Riz Ahmed) and his mates is a rather pathetic character thread, but we’re too busy laughing at bomb-laden trained crows and the boys’ disastrous trip to a training camp in Pakistan. BBC-TV vet Morris (Nathan Barley, The Day Today) and his three-man commando squad of writers wield the same type of satiric sword as former confreres Armando Iannucci and Steve Coogan. This pointed farce lives at the intersection of Christopher Hitchens’ book God Is Not Great and the Three Stooges – and the cops are every bit as vague as the terrorists. (97 min.)
