Fountains of Wayne

When: Sun., Jan. 18, 8 p.m. and Mon., Jan. 19, 8 p.m. 2009

Fountains of Wayne may have commercially stumbled with its last studio effort, 2007's Traffic and Weather, but Adam Schlesinger and his crew haven't rested on their collective laurels. Work on a yet-untitled follow-up has been ongoing in addition to projects composing music for a recent Stephen Colbert holiday special, appearances on recent albums by Juliana Hatfield and the Gutter Twins, plus a hand in an upcoming Posies tribute album. Now the rib-rock power pop quartet is going out on a mini-acoustic tour in which the band will be serving up career-spanning fare along with material from the upcoming fifth release. Opening the show is Candy Butcher's leader Mike Viola, who collaborated with Schlesinger on the music for the 1996 flick That Thing You Do!and just might perform that film's title cut with his FOW buddy at Cafe du Nord (2170 Market St., San Francisco) on Sunday, Jan. 18 & Monday, Jan. 19.8 p.m., $25.
