When: Feb. 4-March 19 2011
Sabine Reckewell and Dianne Romaine prove that minimalism can transcend its restricted means. Reckewell's Linearis installations, reconstructions of earlier works (depicted in drawings also shown here), create Op-Art forms in space with string and wool yarn hung from lines or axes of evenly spaced nails on adjacent corner walls. With their catenary curves, "Angle into Curve (Claremont Studio)" and "Installation with Black String (Claremont Studio)" evoke topographic landscapes, but scanned and graphed - magically abstracted into data. Romaine's untitled, numbered acrylic Flux paintings give the stain techniques of Color Field painting a retro, scientific spin, their dark brown pigment suggesting sepia ink and early photographs. The orbs painted on wet canvas, whether seen close-up and personal or at a remove, in huge clusters, diffuse into soft-edged blooms that evoke both the cellular and the stellar. Linearis and Flux run through March 19 at Chandra Cerrito Contemporary (480 23rd St., Oakland). 510-260-7494 or ChandraCerritoContemporary.com.
