Florence & The Machine

When: Fri., Nov. 5, 8 p.m. 2010

Heartbreak is always a reliable accelerant for sparking the creative fires, and it's never been more evident than when Florence and the Machine hit the studio to record its 2009 debut Lungs. At that point, singer Florence Welch had temporarily broken up with her boyfriend Stuart Hammond. The first hint of something special came when punk stomper "Kiss with a Fist," and its of 2008. Since then, Welch and her crew have been tearing up the tour circuit and unleashing equally inspired songs on our ears. Among them are a swaggering, harp-kissed reading of the CandiStaton classic "You've Got the Love.". It nearly matchesthe howling passion of album opener "Dog Days are Over," which somehow ended up being co-opted into the movie trailer for Eat, Pray, Love. Suffice it to say that Welch will be dragging out a metaphysical psychiatrist's couch for those smart enough to catch her and The Machine on Friday, November 5 at the Fox Theater (1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland), 8 p.m. $25.
