Taiwanese art film director Hou Hsiao-Hsien (Millennium Mambo, Flowers of Shanghai) faithfully remakes the 1956 French childrens classic about a lonely boy and his big red friend, with certain updates. The kid, Simon (young Simon Iteanu), lives with his single mom (Juliette Binoche) and his Chinese nanny (Song Fang), and they skitter through the backstreets of Paris in a light, low-key emotional travelogue. And the balloon still keeps watch over the boy like his guardian angel. And thats all there is. Its more than enough. Written by Hou and François Margolin (113 min.).
