When: Fri., Dec. 29, 8 p.m. 2017
When The Rubinoos started playing Bay Area clubs in the early ’70s, many critics called them “The Beatles of Berkeley.” Their youthful, charismatic stage presence and short catchy tunes featuring Tommy Dunbar’s sparkling lead guitar, Jon Rubin’s heart-warming lead vocals, and the band’s ethereal harmonies made them instant headliners. While their music did echo The Fab Four, they put their own spin on the tunes they created, making them true originals. Their two albums on the Beserkely label, The Rubinoos and Back to the Drawing Board, got them on the charts and earned rave reviews. They’ve since become superstars in Japan and Europe, even though they’ve never made a major impact in their home country. The band is still releasing sharp albums, like 2014’s 45, and touring internationally, so they’ll be in top form when they make a rare local appearance opening for the Flamin’ Groovies on Friday night.
