“French Touch” is a term for the house scene that emerged from France beginning in the ’90s. It’s noted for its infatuation with disco loops, strong melodies, and general cool vibe. Daft Punk is probably the subgenre’s biggest name. Even yacht rock-inspired indie band Phoenix get sort of lumped into this scene. The new French house scene is coming up strong, and FKJ (aka Fresh Kiwi Juice) is one of its strongest players. The music is laid-back and manages to filter nostalgia for the ’70s through a very modern, danceable lens. It’s what French house players have always done, but the results are crisper and the nostalgia is less tongue-in-cheek. FKJ makes ’70s dance music sound cutting edge.
