FKA Twigs is Tahliah Barnett, an English R&B artist who first rose to prominence as a music video dancer, notably in Jessie J’s 2010 hit “Do It Like a Dude.” Dissatisfied with backup roles, Barnes self-released her first EP as FKA Twigs in 2012 and signed to the formidable UK imprint Young Turks the next year. Ever since, a slow but potent drizzle of her singles and music videos has yielded an outpouring of critical appreciation and hype. The tracks warrant it. “Papi Pacify” is minimal R&B deconstructed in the studio and rebuilt with only the clipped and twisted remains of its original parts. Barnett’s singing, however understated, expresses palpable pleasure when voicing the song’s bilingually alliterative title. FKA stands for “formerly known as,” and it’s easy to read as a mission statement. After segueing from sought-after dancer to buzzed-about singer, Barnett appears poised for more reinvention.
