Five Artists -- Five Perspectives

When: July 9-Aug. 27 2010

Rita Bagley, Pam Fingado, Ed Franco, Dorian Leigh, and Sandi Potter explore the modernist tradition in this small group show illustrating RothkoÕs dictum (quoted by Potter) that ÒArt is an adventure into an unknown world.Ó Bagley paints smoldering abstractions based on nocturnal photographs (ÒThe Night Ride,Ó ÒNight Lights From the Light House,Ó ÒEast Shore Views From the Light HouseÓ). Fingado reinterprets historic photographs in a semi-abstract painting style to explore Òtime, memory, and human absence.Ó FrancoÕs paintings (ÒI Am I Said,Ó ÒAfter the MoldauÓ) are abstract, while his mixed-media prints (ÒLosing My Mind,Ó ÒWindmills of Your Mind,Ó ÒButterflyÓ) incorporate collaged papers and handwritten song lyrics. Leigh employs automatist scribbling in visualizing the whimsical or nature spirits in her drawing ÒListening éÓ. PotterÕs lyrical ÒElectric Night WatchÓ combines Òthe vast beauty of landscape and the feeling of isolation and aloneness.Ó Five Artists runs through August 27 at Fingado Art Gallery (7025 Stockton Ave., El Cerrito). 510-643-6494 or
