Federal health officials are rethinking their apparently unnecessary recommendation to close schools where students have tested positive for the swine flu, the Chron reports. Let’s hope they do it, because the flu scare has turned out to be a complete bust, and closing schools because some kids have a mild illness is ridiculous. Thankfully, it seems as if the media hysteria has finally subsided. And those schools that closed their doors amid the over-the-top hype, including Berkeley’s Malcolm X Elementary School, should take a reality check and reopen their campuses. It’s long past time that we got back to some sane, calm thinking on this issue.
