Student protesters finally directed their displeasure at the right target yesterday, as five were arrested for protesting members of the California Legislature. According to the Chron, five UC students were taken into custody at the office of Republican Assemblyman Jim Nielsen after they refused to leave unless he promised to protect funding for higher education.

The peaceful protest came in stark contrast to a riot last week near the UC Berkeley campus that was completely misdirected, and damaged businesses that have nothing to do with the huge increase in college student fees. Yesterday’s demonstration also shows that some student leaders get it. They should direct their anger over massive fee hikes toward the Sacramento politicians responsible for them — and not toward college and universities or the towns in which they reside.
