Fierce People

Rated R 2007

Instead of joining his anthropologist father to live among the Iskanani indians in the wilds of South America during the summer of 1980, a 16-year-old boy (Anton Yelchin) escorts his drug-addled mother (Diane Lane) to a guest house on the estate of an obscenely wealthy family in upstate New York. Director Griffin Dunne, working from Dirk Wittenborn's adaptation of his own novel, pounds away at the analogy between the inherent cruelty of the tribal rituals of the Iskanani and those of the well-heeled. This labored conceit weighs down an otherwise engaging coming-of-age story, which never recovers from a jarring and improbable act of ritualized violence that occurs halfway through the film. With Donald Sutherland, Chris Evans, and Kristen Stewart.
