Festival Opera

When: Sat., July 10, 8:30 p.m. and Tue., July 13, 8:30 p.m. 2010

One way to look at this week's top classical offerings is to think of America vs. the rest of the world. America is represented, not just by the San Francisco Symphony's My Classic American Composers concert of July 8, but also by B. F. Pinkerton -- the arrogant, ignorant, imperialist American sea captain in the Festival Opera production of Puccini's Madama Butterfly. Because of Pinkerton's thoughtless cruelty to young geisha Cio-Cio San, played by Teresa Eickel in her Festival Opera debut, countless opera lovers will leave Walnut Creek crying their hearts out. LesherCenter for the Arts (1601 Civic Dr., Walnut Creek) on Saturday, July 10 and Tuesday, July 13 at 8 p.m. $39-$100. 925-943-7469 or
