Festival of Grassroots Alternatives: Other Worlds are Possible

When: Sun., Sept. 20, 6 p.m. 2009

A lean future lies ahead for the United States, and the best way for us to acclimate might be to look at how other countries have done it. Sunday, Sept. 20's Festival of Grassroots Alternatives at La Peña Cultural Center (3105 Shattuck Ave.) will feature short documentaries about alternative economic models in Africa and South America. It's a rare opportunity for forward-thinking folks to see how a traditional gift economy has helped Mali stave off poverty, or how the Landless Workers Movement has generated cooperative agriculture and land redistribution in Brazil. Ironically, many countries that suffer from a paucity of resources are nonetheless pushing ahead with economic reform, creating equitable education systems and experimenting with cooperative systems. Hence the festival's theme: "Other worlds are possible." 6 p.m., $10-$20. Proceeds benefit Other Worlds, an international collaborative geared toward new economies. LaPena.org
