Farming in West Oakland

Is it possible to subsist entirely on food you grow yourself ... if you live in West Oakland? Most definitely, according to journalist and biofuel station co-owner Novella Carpenter, who has been writing about her experiences on her blog, Urban Farmer. Last year, she lovingly raised a turkey chick named Harold, then eventually chopped off his head with an axe for a Thanksgiving feast. She detailed her experience for Salon. More recently, she made duck confit and rillettes. And she just completed a monthlong experiment eating solely from her farm - beets, apples, onions, cucumbers, mint, honey, kale, eggs, rabbits, etc. Penguin plans to publish Novella's forthcoming memoir, FarmCity: The Education of an Urban Farmer.
