Rock & Pop

When: Fri., Aug. 31, 7 p.m. 2012

Known for such songs as “Sister Fucker” and “Jack Ass in the Will of God,” Eyehategod is something of a legend in the sludge metal scene — particularly the Southern sludge metal scene, which is distinguished by a strain of agro-ness on top of the thick-as-molasses riffs and swampy distortion. (More than a few people have likened the experience of listening to the band’s music to taking uppers and downers at once.) Although it hasn’t released an album in more than a decade, the New Orleans band is apparently working on new material after releasing single “New Orleans Is the New Vietnam” — a reference, no doubt, to the devastation the band experienced post-Hurricane Katrina (singer Mike Williams lost all his belongings and spent three months in jail on a narcotics charge). They’ll play at the Oakland Metro (630 3rd St., Oakland) on Friday, Aug. 31, with Oakland sludge band Noothgrush, Bastard Noise, Stoneburner, and Embers. 7 p.m., $20.
