Everything Must Go

Rated R 97 minutes 2011

Drunk on beer, fired from his job, locked out of his home by his breakup-minded wife, with all his possessions sitting on his suburban front lawn, Will Ferrell has the playing field to himself in this adaptation of a Raymond Carver short story. So then why do we look at our watch every five minutes? It’s a maudlin mess with a candy coating. There’s never the slightest doubt that Ferrell’s would-be loser Nick Halsey is going to come out of it a winner — not with the friendly faces of Rebecca Hall, Christopher Jordan Wallace, Michael Peña, and Laura Dern around. Director/adaptor Dan Rush handles the material like the tired sitcom it is, and Ferrell doesn’t exert himself unduly. They should sell tickets for this turkey at yard sales. (96 min.)
