Ethanol: It's Here to Stay

First came the news that UC Berkeley will partner with the oil giant BP to create a new, multimillion-dollar biofuel research facility. Now, another oil monster has started pushing for more plants in your gas tank. At a Houston energy conference yesterday, Chevron CEO David O'Reilly called on the United States to triple the amount of ethanol use over the next ten years. According to Reuters, O'Reilly stopped short of George W. Bush's goal of 35 billion gallons a year, but argued that the country should take stab at replacing ten percent of its gas consumption with ethanol. O'Reilly didn't mention where we ought to convert the requisite thousands of acres into corn and cane farms.
