Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle

When: Sun., Oct. 3, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. 2010

Look no further than the explosion of museums, art books, and even college courses devoted to graffiti to see that what was once a defiant art form is now being embraced by the institution. Artists themselves have varying opinions about whether that's a good thing, but fans, at least, are lucky to have access to organized events like the 4th Annual Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle, which happens Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 30-Oct. 3, at various Oakland and San Francisco locations. The festival includes film screenings, an artists' talk, and a reception (check website for full schedule) -- but what's sure to be the highlight is Sunday's Invitational Graffiti Battle in DeFremeryPark (1651 Adeline St., Oakland). It'll pit some of the best bombers in the country against each other in a live competition. 11 a.m-5 p.m., free. EstriaBattle.com
