Delightful art and a cute story of inter-species co-existence highlight this charming animated tale of a sweets-loving bear and his tiny mouse “accomplice,” who get into trouble over stolen candy in a marvelously drawn village inhabited only rodents and ursines. Co-directors Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Patar, and Benjamin Renner manage to balance heart-tugs and metaphorical rabble-rousing in adapting the children’s books of Belgian author Gabrielle Vincent, so grown-ups and kids can co-exist as well while watching it. The adaptation and dialogue are by Daniel Pennac. Presented at separate showings in both English – with Forest Whitaker (Ernest) and Mackenzie Foy (Ernestine) handling the lead voices – and subtitled French, with Lambert Wilson and Pauline Brunner (80 min.).
