All Ages, Jazz, Lounge, & Cabaret

Eric Reed

When: Mon., March 23, 8 & 10 p.m. 2009

Eric Reed certainly has the pedigree of a great jazz standard-bearer: piano lessons starting at age two; church band duties by age five; art schools in Philadelphia and Los Angeles; an apprenticeship with Wynton Marsalis that would later land him gigs with Joe Henderson and Freddie Hubbard. Now known as a hard-driving rhythm player, 38-year-old Reed works in multiple band configurations, including a quintet with two saxophone players and a piano-bass-drum trio. Even with the spartan set-up, Reed puts on a phenomenal show. He's the type of player who can lay some chord changes on top of a bass ostinato, and create a powerful groove. Moreover, his solos are elegant and his band members always work well in dialogue. Eric Reed performs Monday, Mar. 23 at Yoshi's(510 Embarcadero West, Oakland) with drummer Kevin Kanner and bassist Hamilton Price IV. 8 & 10 p.m., $10, $16.
