CITY OF SIN: Two one-act operas conclude West Edge Opera's "POPERA" Season

Sun., July 29, Fri., Aug. 3 and Sun., Aug. 5 2012
510-524-9012

Kurt Weill's Mahagonny Songspiel
Daron Hagen's Vera of Las Vegas

Weill's powerful satire on materialistic society uses cabaret and jazz styles to entertain us while sketching a devastating allegory of basic human desires and their inevitable frustration - an allegory that is as timely today as it was at its premiere 85 years ago.

Hagen has created a quintessentially American dream-gone-wrong opera - Two former IRA operatives, trying to escape their nightmares, become enmeshed in a surrealistic Vegas fantasy of sex- and identity-confusion. The highly melodic score is a delightful mashup of cabaret, folk-rock, Broadway and modern classical styles. Internationally acclaimed countertenor Brian Asawa stars as Vera.
Plenty of parking and a 10-minute walk from El Cerrito Plaza BART.
