Culture flourished in tandem with commerce along the Silk Road, a 2,000-year-old trade route linking China, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. Twenty Bay Area dancers and musicians with roots in the Eurasian diaspora explore that heritage in Encounters: New Moon on the Silk Road, presented by the acclaimed Afsaneh Art & Culture Society at FortMason's Cowell Theater (Marina Blvd. and Buchanan St., San Francisco) on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 20-21. In New Moon, Eastern traditions and Western ideas commingle in kathak dance, Persian poetry, spoken word and song, and a modern score by Moses Sedler, played live on traditional and contemporary instruments. The cast includes numerous East Bay artists, among them dancer/choreographers Miriam Peretz and Wan-Chao Chang, kathak performer GopiBatra, PedramHeydari on Persian kamanchem, KavehHedayati on Persian setar, and Paul Ohanesian on oud.
