All good things come in threes. On August 17, E.M. Wolfman Small Interest Bookstore (410 13th St., Oakland) will be hosting a very good trio of authors: Emily Mitchell, Eliza Smith, and Colin Winnette. Mitchell, who teaches at the University of Maryland, is currently on tour for her new book Viral: Stories, which features short, absurd tales that range from horror to heartbreak — including one about a young girl with a giant robot spider as a best friend, and another about an online cult that leads its members to mass suicide. Smith, a producer and editor for NPR’s “Snap Judgment,” is based in Oakland and has a keen taste for fiction. And the Denton, Texas-based Winnette recently released his latest novel, Haints Stay, a neo-western about three bounty hunters traveling through the desert from one violent scene to the next. The lineup is odd and edgy in all the best ways.
