Ellen Robinson

When: Fri., Oct. 22, 8 p.m. 2010

Jazz singer, songwriter, bandleader, and choral director Ellen Robinson actually started her career as a folky singer-songwriter in New York City. She shifted to jazz after coming to the Bay Area in the '80s, and became known for her subtle phrasing and emotional intensity. Her repertoire includes standards, modern pop, folk tunes, and original songs marked by their witty word play and unexpected shifts in rhythm and tempo. An inventive scat singer, Robinson is always full of surprises. Her fine backing quartet includes pianist Murray Low, Sam Bevan on bass, drummer Bud Spangler, and saxophonist Kristen Strom.
