Elizabeth Opalenik

When: Wed., Nov. 28, 7:30 p.m. 2007

In her Oakland darkroom, Elizabeth Opalenikpursues the craft of mordançage -- aka bleach-etch, etch-bleach, gelatin relief, and reverse relief -- in which bleach is used to partially dissolve a photographic image. The silver emulsion is removed, lifted, or shifted to create otherworldly, one-of-a-kind artworks: real-life scenes manipulated to evoke dreams, all shifting contrasts and trailing veils. At Diesel (5433 College Ave., Oakland) on Nov. 28, Opalenik discusses her monograph Poetic Grace: Photographs 1979-2007, whose mordançage renditions of nudes, flowers, faces, and more reveal why she is now considered one of the world's top masters of this arcane craft. 7:30 p.m.
