Soul, Funk, R&B, & Hip-Hop

When: Fri., June 29, 8 p.m. 2012

Jaime Meline has seen the highs and lows of a hip-hop lifetime. Originally known as El Producto in his role as part of New York's Company Flow, Meline has been an emcee for almost twenty years. His contemporaries -- rappers like Del The Funky Homosapien, Aesop Rock, and Despot -- sometimes reflect his style, but El-P is unique in his ability to keep up with the times. His brand new album Cancer For Cure is searing and quick-witted, incorporating nerdy, alternative hip-hop with in-your-face braggadocio. Its production is essentially heavy EDM, with full, serrated square wave synths and deep, shuffling bass. Its sound is oblique enough to belie Meline's wry sense of humor, which comes through  every so often (see if you can find the sly Woody Allen quote on "The Jig Is Up"), but maybe a window into his humor isn't necessary. After all, the intent of Cancer For Cure is to galvanize rather than merely amuse. This week El-P will hit the Bay Area alongside ATLien and Outkast collaborator Killer Mike, who just put out new album R.A.P. Music Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire and Despot will support. At The Regency Ballroom (1300 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco) on Friday, June 29,  8 p.m. $22.50,
