The heartwarming story of a musician who passed through the '60s, '70s, and '80s by doing boatloads of drugs, cheating on his wife, and fueling his revolutionary music with the pain he inflicted upon himself. Hell, he even gets AIDS! In other words, El Cantante, the story of salsa pioneer Hector Lavoe and his tumultuous relationship with his wife Puchi, is pretty much like every other movie you've ever seen about musicians. Except maybe Mr. Holland's Opus. El Cantante is nothing like Mr. Holland's Opus. It does, however, have Marc Anthony as Lavoe, which is, believe it or not, worth the price of admission.
