Eddie Palmieri is one of the giants of the Latin piano. He's won nine Grammys, including the first Latin Jazz Grammy for his 1973 album The Sun of Latin Music, a groundbreaking combination of swinging jazz and bubbling dance grooves that span the Latin continuum. During the Sixties, his first incarnation of La Perfecta blended Latin and African-American music to pioneer the Latin funk sound. He put together Perfecta II in 2002 to revisit the band's classic repertoire and allow Palmieri to explore the richness of his new compositions. With many old cohorts in tow, La Perfecta II lives up to its name with its blazing horn lines and Palmieri's always-inventive keyboard work. Eddie Palmieri & La Perfecta II will play from Wednesday, May 19, to Sunday, May 23, at Yoshi's (1330 Fillmore St., San Francisco). $18-$30.
