Jazz, Lounge, & Cabaret

Ed Reed

When: Mon., July 25, 8 p.m. 2011

Ed Reed has been a jazz singer since he got his first music lesson from Chares Mingus in 1947. For decades, his career was hamstrung by drug use, but he cleaned up 25 years ago and started rebuilding his life. He cut his debut album in 2007 when he was 77. His mellow baritone and fine, emotional phrasing made the album an event and nabbed him a Rising Star Award from Downbeat Critics in 2009 and 2009. He'll be celebrating the release of his third album, Born to Be Blue, with an all-star band of local players. At Yoshi's (510 Embracadero West, Oakland) on Monday July 25. 8 p.m., $14. Yoshis.com
