EastSide's Annual Holiday Art Sale & Open House

When: Fri., Dec. 11, 4-8 p.m. 2009

During the blustery months of December, Oakland turns into a veritable hotbed of craft fairs, art open-houses, and homegrown marketplaces for the ecologically minded shopper. One of the best takes place on Friday, Dec. 11, at EastSide Cultural Center (2277 International Blvd.), where the offerings include postcolonial literature and political poster art done in the tabloid-newspaper style of Emory Douglas and Favianna Rodriguez. This year’s holiday art sale and open house includes food, happy-hour drink specials, a DJ, and work by local artisans. (4-8 p.m., free.) The following day, EastSide will host a terrific jazz concert by the Grassroots Ensemble, featuring seven instrumentalists (including pianist Duane Muziki Roberson), who’ve spent the last eight years jamming together in East Oakland on a regular basis. They’ll present original compositions and new reinterpretations of old standards on Saturday, Dec. 12. 8 p.m., $10. EastSideArtsAlliance.org
