East Bay SPCA Annual Adoptathon

When: Sun., July 22, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. 2012

Aside from their tendencies toward extreme cuteness, pets are also widely touted as beneficial to our health (unless, of course, you're allergic). The Center for Disease Control and Prevention attributes pet ownership to decreases in owners' blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and -- perhaps least surprisingly -- feeling of loneliness. With that in mind, consider the East Bay SPCA's Adoptathon not only a chance to mingle with adorable, adoptable animals, but a step toward better health. The annual event features more than three hundred adoptable animals -- including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and reptiles -- along with dog-training demonstrations, pet-themed activities for tykes, low-cost microchipping, and many more animal-tastic attractions. In Jack London Square (70 Washington St., Oakland) on Sunday, July 22. 10 a.m.-3 p.m., free. 510-563-4605 or EastBaySPCA.org
