East Bay Mini Maker Faire

When: Sun., Oct. 14, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. 2012

Three years ago, when a couple DIY types founded the East Bay's ultra-kid-friendly alternative to the massive San Mateo Maker Faire, it was relatively a novel and nichey concept. Now, in the era of DIY everything, the idea feels downright prescient, and the event itself has grown commensurately with the zeitgeist, attracting some 5,000 tinkerers, crafters, creators, and generally curious types last year. This year's iteration, to be held on Sunday, Oct. 14, at Park Day School (360 42nd St., Oakland) has expanded to include more than one hundred maker exhibits; workshops on soldering, butter-churning, screen-printing, and more; a "pedal-powered amusement ride"; plus panels, music, and plenty else in the way of great and geeky. 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; $15 online or $20 at the door, kids $10 or $15.
