East Bay Hills Five-Day Through-Hike

When: Aug. 31-Sept. 4 2011

Strap on your hiking shoes; it's time to head for the hills. From Wednesday, Aug. 31, through Sunday, Sep. 4, the Bay Area Ridge Council hosts a sixty-mile trek along the spine of the hills that partition the EastBay. The route begins in Martinez and ends in Castro Valley, covering 35 miles of the Bay Area Ridge Trail and 25 miles of adjacent loops. Participants need carry only a daypack (camping gear is transported from stop to stop) and are treated to good food and a series of naturalist programs. Registration costs $55 per day or $250 for the full hike; proceeds support continued development of the Bay Area Ridge Trail, the San Francisco Bay Trail's higher-elevation counterpart. Space is limited to 75 participants per day. 415-561-2595 or

Price: $55 per day; $250 for five days
